Ocean freight from China to Colombia: transit times, ports and quotes
Shipping by sea is the most economical way to bring commercial goods from Asia. In this guide we cover what you need to know about ocean freight from China to Colombia: ports, transit times, the difference between a full container and consolidated cargo, what drives the price and how to get a quote for your cargo.
Last updated: September 2026. Transit times are approximate and depend on the shipping line, the route and the season.
Main ports of origin and destination
The most frequent routes connect China’s major ports with both of Colombia’s coasts:
- Ports of origin in China: Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Qingdao and Xiamen, among others.
- Colombian Pacific coast: Buenaventura, the port closest to Asia and convenient for the southwest of the country.
- Colombian Caribbean coast: Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta, reached through the Panama Canal.
Ocean freight transit times from China to Colombia
| Route | Port-to-port transit (approximate) |
|---|---|
| China – Buenaventura | 25 to 32 days |
| China – Cartagena | 28 to 35 days |
On top of transit time, add production, consolidation and loading at origin, and at destination unloading, customs clearance and transport to your warehouse. So when planning your inventory, calculate the total door-to-door time, not just the time at sea.
FCL or LCL: which option is right for you?
| Option | When it makes sense | How it is charged |
|---|---|---|
| FCL (full container load) | Large volumes; you use the container exclusively. | Per container. |
| LCL (less than container load) | Small volumes that share a container with other importers. | Per cubic meter or per ton, whichever is greater. |
For reference, approximate container capacity is about 33 m³ for a 20-foot container, 67 m³ for a 40-foot container and 76 m³ for a 40-foot high cube. When your cargo approaches half a container, it is worth comparing the cost of LCL against FCL.
What determines the freight price?
- Volume and weight of the cargo.
- Route and ports of origin and destination.
- Season: rates usually rise before Chinese New Year and during the year-end peak season.
- Type of cargo: dangerous, refrigerated or oversized goods have special rates.
- Shipping line surcharges, such as fuel or peak season surcharges.
- Origin and destination charges, which depend on the negotiated Incoterm.
Ocean freight rates change frequently, sometimes from one week to the next. So rather than a reference price, what you need is an up-to-date quote for your cargo.
Ocean or air freight
Air freight is much faster, but also more expensive. It is used for samples, urgent spare parts or high-value, low-volume goods. For commercial inventory, ocean freight is usually the most cost-effective option.
Shipping documents
- Bill of lading (BL): the contract of carriage and document of title to the goods.
- Commercial invoice and packing list from the supplier.
- Cargo insurance policy.
