How to import from China to Colombia via Alibaba without risk
Alibaba is the most widely used platform for finding Chinese manufacturers, but buying there without a clear method can be costly. In this guide we explain how to import from China to Colombia via Alibaba safely: how to choose suppliers, what to check before paying and how to ship and clear your goods through customs.

Is it safe to buy on Alibaba?
Alibaba is a wholesale (B2B) directory that connects buyers with thousands of manufacturers and trading companies. The platform is reliable, but the risk depends on the supplier you choose: it also hosts middlemen posing as factories, photos that do not match the real product and, in extreme cases, companies that do not exist. That is why the safety of your purchase depends on how you select and verify the supplier.
Step 1: define your product and check the requirements in Colombia
Before looking for suppliers, identify your product’s tariff subheading. This tells you how much duty and VAT you will pay and whether you need prior permits from INVIMA, ICA or other agencies. We explain everything in our guide to the requirements to import from China to Colombia.
Step 2: search and filter suppliers
Use the platform’s filters and prioritize suppliers that show these signals:
- Verified Supplier: the company was audited by a third party that confirmed its existence and capacity.
- Trade Assurance: protects your payment if the supplier fails to deliver the agreed quality or shipping times.
- Years on the platform, response rate and ratings from other buyers.
- A manufacturer, not just a trading company, if you are looking for the best price or customized products.
Keep in mind that the Gold Supplier badge means the supplier pays an annual membership; on its own, it does not guarantee quality or the existence of a factory.
Step 3: request quotes and samples
Ask three to five suppliers for quotes with the same specifications. Compare the minimum order quantity (MOQ), the price under each Incoterm, production times and packaging. Before placing a large order, request samples: the shipping cost is small compared with the risk of receiving a product that does not meet your standards.
Step 4: verify the supplier before paying
Alibaba’s badges help, but they do not replace an independent verification. Confirm the company’s business license, that its address corresponds to a real plant and that its production capacity is sufficient for your order. With MG Verify we inspect the factory live via video call and give you a report with a risk traffic light before you make the first payment.
Step 5: negotiate the Incoterm and payment terms
The Incoterm defines where the supplier’s responsibility ends and who pays each cost. These are the most common:
| Incoterm | What the price includes | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| EXW | The goods at the factory; you take on everything from there. | Only if you have a freight forwarder in China. |
| FOB | The goods loaded on board at the port of origin. | The most common option: you control freight and insurance. |
| CIF | Freight and insurance to the destination port. | Review destination charges, which may be inflated. |
| DDP | Delivery at destination with duties and taxes paid. | Make sure the import is declared legally and in your name. |
As for payment, a deposit (for example, 30%) with the balance before shipment is common. Always pay into the supplier company’s accounts, preferably through Trade Assurance, and never into personal accounts. Remember that in Colombia import payments must be channeled through the foreign exchange market, via your bank.
Step 6: inspect quality before shipment
Request a pre-shipment inspection and make payment of the balance conditional on its approval. Quantities, dimensions, finishes, packaging and labeling are checked against the purchase order. If you prefer to delegate the entire purchasing process, with MG Source we act as your sourcing agent in China: we negotiate, inspect and pay on your behalf.
Step 7: transport and customs clearance in Colombia
For small shipments you can use the postal and express courier mode, which has its own value limits and rules. For commercial quantities, ocean freight is the usual choice: consolidated (LCL) if your volume is small or a full container (FCL) if it is large. Learn about transit times and ports in our guide to ocean freight from China to Colombia and calculate your duties and taxes with our guide to customs clearance costs.
Common mistakes when importing from China to Colombia via Alibaba
- Choosing a supplier based only on the lowest price.
- Buying replicas of registered trademarks: the goods may be held and seized.
- Skipping samples on the first order.
- Paying outside the platform or into personal accounts.
- Accepting invoices showing less than the real value to pay less duty.
- Not calculating the total cost (freight, duties, taxes and local charges) before buying.
Frequently asked questions about importing from China to Colombia via Alibaba
Can I buy on Alibaba as an individual?
Yes. For a formal import you need a RUT with the customs user responsibility (code 23, importer) and must meet the requirements for your product.
What is the difference between Alibaba and AliExpress?
Alibaba is a wholesale platform for negotiating directly with manufacturers, with minimum orders and volume pricing. AliExpress is a retail store for buying individual units, with higher prices per product.
How long does an Alibaba order take to arrive in Colombia?
It depends on the production time, which varies by product, plus transport. By sea, transit between China and Colombia usually takes 25 to 35 days port to port, not counting consolidation and customs clearance.
